How the pool salt calculator works
Salinity is measured in parts per million (ppm), which is the weight of salt relative to the weight of water. Since a US gallon of water weighs about 8.34 pounds, the calculator works out the total weight of your pool water, multiplies by the gap between your current and target salinity, and converts that fraction into the pounds of salt needed.
Adding salt safely
Add salt gradually with the pump running and brush it across the pool floor so it dissolves rather than settling. Retest after about a day before adding more. It is easier to top up with another small amount than to dilute an over-salted pool, so aim slightly under target on the first pass.
