Preparing for foaling
As the due date approaches, move the mare to a clean, quiet foaling stall or a safe, well-fenced paddock and let her settle in ahead of time. Keep foaling supplies and your vet's contact details on hand. Because mares often foal quickly and at night, many breeders use a foaling alarm or camera in the final weeks.
Why the range is so wide
Unlike animals with tightly clustered due dates, mares show a broad normal range of 320 to 370 days. Season of breeding has a real effect, with longer gestations common for mares bred early in the year. Use the estimated date to plan, but begin close monitoring well before it and stay alert for several weeks after.
