The 3-3-3 rule
Pig gestation is famously close to 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days, which works out to about 114 days. The rule is a handy memory aid, but individual sows vary, so the calculator shows a window rather than a single guaranteed date. Track each sow's actual farrowing dates over time to refine your own herd average.
Preparing for farrowing
Clean and disinfect the farrowing area, provide a warm creep zone for the piglets and ensure the sow has fresh water and a suitable diet. Watch for nesting behaviour, restlessness and milk let-down as signs farrowing is near. Be on hand during birth to help if a piglet is stuck and to make sure each newborn nurses and stays warm.
